Part 04 of 6
Missed call, text back
Every trade misses calls. The ones that keep winning the work are the ones that text straight back, before the caller has dialled anyone else.
Most people who ring a trade and get no answer do not leave a voicemail. They hang up and ring the next one down the list. The call is not a near miss, it is a lost job, and you never even know it happened.
The fix is not answering more calls. You are working. The fix is for the caller to hear from you before they have finished dialling somebody else.
So the moment a call goes unanswered they get a text asking what they need. Most people reply to it, which means by the time you are down off the ladder the job is already described and waiting for you.
Trades miss around four calls in ten, mostly because they are up a ladder or under a sink. Put your own average job value against that, and work out how many of those you would need to catch for the whole thing to pay for itself.
What that means in practice
A text before they ring your competitor
The second a call goes unanswered, they get a text asking what they need. No voicemail to ignore, no silence, no reason to try the next trade on the list.
You ring back knowing the job
They reply with the work and the postcode, so you call back already knowing what it is and roughly what it is worth.
You look like a business that never misses
Every call gets an answer, even at 9pm on a Sunday. The customer sees a trade that is on top of things, without you touching the phone out of hours.
Ready when you are
Every unanswered callis a job going somewhere else.
Put your average job value against the calls you missed last week, and work out how many of them you would need to catch.
